You're right, it's in the pipe since 2002 ^_^.

There is indeed something in libegg:

and the same code also moved to gnome-session
http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnome-session/branches/new-gnome-session/egg/

But it definitely not clear what the resulting api will be in Gtk+.
Even then, we need some implementation in libxfce4ui (or maybe
xfce4-session), until the desktop depends on gtk 2.14/2.16.

We could also leave xsmp behind us and switch to sm through dbus...
