taskbar expander confusion

Those aren't expanders.  It's just an indication that the taskbar has
"grouped" several windows of the same application under the same taskbar
button to conserve space.  I believe there's an option somewhere to
disable this behavior if you don't like it.

FYI: xfterm4 is just a wrapper script that runs your preferred terminal
emulator (whatever's in the TERMCMD environment variable).
