Gmail works fine for me.  Why are you selecting a non-standard port?
You should be using "SSL/TLS on alternate port", and leave the "use
nonstandard port box unchecked.  (Though, non-standard selected with
port 995 should work, since "alternate port" implies port 995.  I'll
have a look.)

Also, make sure that you have POP3 support enabled in Gmail's settings.
