automatic labelling of tabs is likely to be too clumsy in practice.
how about simply showing a number on the tab itself -- short enough -- ,
but bringing up a tool-tip with whatever label the user chooses to add ?
the tool-tip mt default to the number, if the user doesn't set anything else,
but s/he cd choose an explicit label via a R-click on the tab.
partly, i'm thinking of how Konqueror handles tabs for I/net pages,
where with many tabs the actual tabs may show 1 letter,
but the tool-tip shows the page title from the HTML (if any).
