I think that if benny's patch works it is a worthy addition to xfce, 
because apps still using the KDE protocol will then work.
That's why the KDE systray implements the freedesktop.org protocol along 
with all of KDE's protocols.

I'm not saying, however, that xfce should support every protocol KDE has 
implemented, but rather the most recent one as a transitional 
compatibility layer while developers update their apps to support the 
new standard.

I also realize this is easier said than done ;)
