debian update broke something?

After getting a large number of debian sid updates, I downloaded a fresh
cvs of XFce4 and a fresh script from the link on Jasper's page.
Everything appeared to build as normal.
xfwm4 won't start. Here's the terminal text-
Message: xfwm4: running without session manager
xfwm4: Relocation error xfwm4: undefined symbol: MyDisplayFullWidth
xftaskbar4 won't start. Here's the terminal text-
** message: cannot connect to session manager
** message canot get desktop margins
(xftaskbar4:19907): GDK Critical**: file gdkscreen-x11.c: line 122
(GDK_Screen_get_display): assertion GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen) failed
segmentation fault
I used non-digital devices (paper and pen) to copy the lines of text.
With no window manager I cannot copy anything between windows. I'm back
to XFce3 until I get this straigntened out.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Most importantly, _thank you_ to all the developers for the tremendous
effort in putting XFce4 together.
