The freedesktop menu spec doesn't force a hierarchical (sp?) menu. It
specifies how to group menu items according to 'topic'. A topic would
something like 'Dev Tools', 'Office Apps', 'Internet', etc.

Most desktops use this to create a hierarchical menu. We could use it to
autogenerate menus according to subject.

So I suppose, the user could choose to make a popup either the current
style of manually added items or autogenerated on some theme/topic.

This is obviously stuff for 4.2 or 4.4 even.
