error when trying to run startxfce4

I received the following error when trying to run startxfce4. It was suggested I
post it to this list.

/opt/xfce4/bin/xfce4-panel: error while loading shared libraries:
libstartup-notification-1.so.0: cannot open shared object or file: no such file
or directory


at which point it continues to try to restart the panel. Did i simply do
something wrong or is this a bug?
