An understanding of options

You should know that it is a bit of a tactic as well. 

Most requests for options are either something that doesn't work right
and the user asks for an option to change it because (s)he is to kind to
tell us to fix the bloody thing, or it is something he was used to from
another environment.

Well, saying no at first gives the user time to get used to our version.
If the problem is really big, complains will keep coming and we know we
should probably do something about it.

Even then we should first consider if we shouldn't be using another
default config if everyone else does something and we are not.

That is part of the reason. The other one is that now we are trying to
get a release out, so we will be least reponsive to requests. The best
you can hope for now is 'we will look at it after 4.0'.

So, make sure you remind us after we have released and you will have a
bigger chance of getting a positive answer for your request.
