oh dear install weirdness.

Okay im having a bit of confusion.
previously whenever i used the install script everything was installing in 
/usr/local/*
now ive noticed everything being installed in /usr/X11R6 now i have 2 of 
everything.
the bins are in both /usr/X11R6/bin and /usr/local/bin
the themes and so on are in both places etc etc.
when i startx (with xfce4-session in my .xinitrc) it apparently starts the 
wrong panel that only sees a portion of the panel icons and apps. it leaves 
out ones such as the system load monitor and the mixer. I dont know how 
this happened and am a bit confused as to how to go about fixing it. Has 
this happened to anyone else? and if so.. any clues how to remedy it? Of 
course one of the installations has to go but im not sure which. :/
