Desktop menus not showing

Newly built this evening from cvs.

How do I get a menu on the desktop, Tried every combination of single
and/or double clicking on all three mouse keys I could figure.

A few builds ago the menus appeared  but died as soon as a selection was made.

My ~/.xinitrc is

xfce-mcs-manager
xfwm4 --daemon
exec xfce4-panel &
xfbd4 -i
xfmouse4
exec xfdeskmenu
-- 
~/.deskmenurc copied direct chown to me

Am I missing something here?
