XFREE86 4.3.0 and Cursors

I'm having trouble getting the default cursor to work.  It seems to work
for Gnome.  I've set the default in theme like I'm supposed to... 

in /usr/share/cursors/xfree/default/index.theme

Gnome and gdm both seem to work fine... default white cursor.  But once
I log in, even with a new user, I get a huge RED cursor.  Like I said,
Gnome works fine.  

What can I do?
