This sounds good. I'd prefer that if the panel is not an edge, it should
collapse to the *smallest* side. This could be either the height or
width depending on whether it is vertical or horizontal. But I suppose
this could be a user preference.

Secondly, IMHO the collapsed window should have some decoration to
indicate what it is if it is not on an edge.
