4.20-pre1 : stuck in workspace 0

So much for logging in after barely sleeping - it seems I'd used
startx (finger memory).  Retried startxfce4 --wayland (labwce), and
also specifying wayfire.  Not able to logout from either.

And stuck on workspace0 just like yesterday.
