4.20-pre1 : stuck in workspace 0

For my sins, I started by trying to use wayfire as the compositor.
Mostly works, my custom xkeyboard settings all work, from time to
time the screen blanks until I do something, and the "wobbly"
windows are not to my taste. But I could get used to that. However
I'm stuck on workspace 0 and cannot get to other workspaces.
That is with all the pre1 packages, subsequent applications from
4.18 not rebuilt, minimal wayfire.ini.
So then I tried using labwc - (screen just blanked as I paused
there!), windows are not wobbly but looked nicer in wayfire, these
have light title bars although menus in non-gnome apps are dark
themed, keyboard lacks my Compose key etting (I guess labwc doesn't
like using right menu for grp change in XKB), but I'm still stuck in
Workspace0.
It used to be I could Ctrl-Alt-left-cursor|right-cursor or click on
the workspace in the panel, even if the workspace is empty, but I
cannot see where to click and no icons show for workspace contnets,
even for workspace0, with either compositor.
Is there an idiot's guide to how to use xfce in wayland ?
I had one oddity on the first run (could not logout,
org.xfce.SessionManager not found) but after rebooting that went
away and startxfce4 continues to work normally for X11.
But the longer I sit here trying to type this, the more annoyed I
get by the screen blanking. I suppose I have to move the mouse in a
certain time frame ?
