We may get to a point where X becomes relegated to a second class
target, relatively but as far as a complete replacement, I have strong
doubts.

I don't think Wayland will replace X, but Something Else™ will
supersede (but not replace) both X and Wayland, the way systemd largely
superseded sysvinit and upstart (which was hailed as the successor once
upon a time).
