application menu with left mouse click?

More about the issue itself:

It is not logical that Applications button on the panel is pressed with
left mouse button, but on the workspace with right button. And then I
cannot use the same right button to start an app, but need to switch to
left button.

Showing and starting apps should work the same way on the workspace as
it works on the panel.

So is it really so that my only choice to fork the project and patch the
source?
