If anyone's interested, I finally found out the cause.  A new release of 
KDE's plasma-workspace package (which I have installed, but not running) 
is causing a conflict with xfce4-notifyd in dbus.  I opened a bug about 
it: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=381693
