keyboard shortcut problem

Running a new install of xfce4Debian Jessie which loads xfce4 4.10.

After entering Alt-a as a shortcut to open the xfce4 terminal I observed
Alt-L pop up in the list for the same action. Tried several times with
the same result.When I gave up and tried Alt-L I got.......nothing. Not
even an error message.

/var/log/dmesg was empty (this is a new install) and /var/log/messages
showed a lot of "no hotplug settings from platform" and "using default
PCI settings". I have no idea what those mean, or if they have anything
to do with my problem, but there sure a lot of them.

Any help troubleshooting this would be appreciated.
