Ok, that's good, we can rule anything relating to ads I would think.

Maybe there is something odd going on with the url.
Could you open a "Last hour" list and copy paste the "Detail map" link
and paste it in an email? It will a render a link such as below:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=19.378334,+-155.2380066+(Earthquake+Magnitude:+2.29+Region:+5km+S+of+Volcano,Hawaii+Rendered+by+equake+applet)&iwloc=A&hl=en
In the new google maps it redirects to:
https://www.google.com/maps/place/19%C2%B022%2742.0%22N+155%C2%B014%2716.8%22W/@19.378334,-155.2380066,1074m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0!6m1!1e1
That's using the same browser version as yours, 31.6.
If using an older browser such as 24.8.1 from Debian squeeze it will use
the old google maps, that is google's webservers choose to direct you to
the older google maps. I assume since the new one is not compatible with
the older browsers.
Do any of the above links open ok in your browser?
Thanks,
Jeroen
