Ok... Found the culprit. It seems that the session does save the
absolute path to the executable(s). In ~/.cache, the last session
contains a reference to the complete path, including the 
firefox-27.0.1 directory name. 

Going to 'Sessions and startup', and 'Saving' manually solves the
problem.

It's arguable that saving the entire path is really a practical
solution, even though nobody ever specified it and the original program
wasn't started with that path.
