~/.xinitrc could be the culprit too. Juts in case, don't delete it. Most
of the times the DM does start sessions by desktop files
in /usr/share/xsessions/, but it's also possible to start sessions by
"case in" entries in ~/.xinitrc. IOW assumed there is a ~/.xinitrc, then
open it with an editor and if needed, delete apps that are started by
this file, excepted of WMs/DEs.
