It's a combination of DEs getting bloated, different world views, init
scripts, upstart, systemd, different policies as split and customized
packages vs packages that follow upstream and/or the KISS principle.

I use a WM and some applications from DEs, e.g. xfce4-appfinder,
xfce4-power-manager, pluma (a gedit fork), but I e.g. prefer Xfe over
Thunar and ROXTerm over xfce4-terminal, not to mention that I use
command line very much. For testing purpose I installed Cinnamon and
Mate, as long as you don't start something that belongs to those GNOME
forks, when starting a Xfce session, they don't have negative impact. I
even wouldn't start lxpolkit or similar for my WM sessions.

Speaking for Arch Linux, close to upstream, it might be different for
other distros and GNOME3 or Unity might have bad impact, I don't know.
