Is it possible to stop sessions being saved?

To be honest - it is not always easy to me to understand, why an
application is restarted in the next session. I added thunderbird in
the application autostart - but next time it complained it would be
running twice. Same for Hotot.
Next time, the guayadeque player started automatically, but I cannot
find it in the session screen.
Couldn't the autostart programs be excluded from the session
startings, somehow? It does not make sense, to have some programs in
both groups, doesn't it?
