One note regarding the 'gvfs thing' (made some tests after this thread
started): The commit which came in in 4.8 branch only affected thunar
side pane only in shortcuts mode (if I understood the code correctly,
in 4.10 code was reworked and made the patch obsolete).

As long as side pane is in tree mode, gvfs causes a huge delay even
with current version.
