Xfce is very, very, very slow

1 GiB should be enough. Hartmut didn't mention if e.g. top was ok
regarding to memory usage.

That was and still is one of my favourite thoughts too, a dying HDD
often does cause this issue. Hartmut still didn't reply with a disk
check or an answer that there aren't issues for another install.
