Network Manager applet not in panel in 14.04

I have recently upgraded my netbook from 13.10 to 14.04, it all seems
to work pretty well but there's no nm-applet in the panel.

There are two nm-applet processes running:-

    chris$ ps -ef | grep nm-applet
    chris     1870  1612  1 22:06 ?        00:00:00 nm-applet
    chris     1885  1612  1 22:06 ?        00:00:00 nm-applet
    chris     2206  2107  0 22:06 pts/8    00:00:00 grep --color=auto nm-applet

So what's gone wrong?  The panel seems to be functioning normally
otherwise.
