What does xfsettingsd do?

Hello,

When playing around with some alternative window managers, I noticed
that running or not running xfsettingsd has quite some effects on
non-XFCE applications as well.

For example, the fonts and menu bar in my X11 Emacs look considerably
nicer if I have xfsettingsd running.

Can someone explain to me how this interaction comes about? I assume
that emacs does not come with support for XFCE's xfsettingsd, so how do
they communicate with each other?

Curious,
-Nikolaus
