limit placement of desktop icons?

I suppose there is probably a way to do this, but I haven't found it yet: 
can you limit the placement of desktop icons, to leave a margin at the 
edge of the desktop clear? I have a vertical panel on the left of my 
desktop, and the default icon placement puts a first column of icons
underneath it.
