I assume you are talking about Thunar? I never use it (I prefer mc) but
when I doubleclicked on prboom.wad I get first 'Recommenden Applications',
the 'Other applications'

Perhaps it depends on how you do the installation. I have installed
openSUSE 12.2 with XFCE from the start. Instead of selecting KDE or GNOME,
select Other and you can select XFCE (and some other options).

openSUSE then does the installation. I add some stuff after that. e.g.
some xfce4-panel-plugin things, geeqie and kdenlive.
