Well, I have plugged in an external hard drive as an example. Yes an 
icon appears on the desktop. If I right click on the icon the choices 
are Open which shows me the contents, Eject volume which brings up a 
warning that there is data to be written to the device. This is not 
true, I have not touched the data at all. And Properties which is just 
the usual information.

In KDE I could click on the icon  on the panel and then click on the 
name of the device. This would cause some tidying up of any changes that 
I had made. followed by a message telling me that it was now safe to 
remove it.

I can't find anything like that here in Xfce. Or am I missing something? 
I don't want to simply remove the item and cause a problem because there 
is a need to tidy it up first.
