Thanks for all the help with this, it has been very useful. I have had a 
look at the info about Arch and I now understand what it is all about.
However, for the time being I have installed Mint Maya Xfce onto my hard 
disk, as a dual boot system. I have a 1 Tb disk so there is plenty of room.

Everything has gone very well so far. My only moan is with Firefox where 
there is no longer the option to place the tab bar below the others. I 
am sure that when I was trying it out via VBox I was able to do that. Of 
course I have had to run a load of updates since the install so it could 
be that FF has been updated. I suppose I must get used to it.
