I wish I knew!  This is one of those low level things that devs know and 
most users don't even know that they don't know.  I at least know that I 
don't know.  I have more or less presumed that the GTK libraries are 
dynamically linked by XFCE and other progs. but I don't really know.  
And I presume that they are backwards compatible and that one can 
replace 2 with 3 but, again, I'm guessing.  Synaptic shows me a mixture 
of versions with 129 total packages, and  I have no idea what to make of 
it, but nothing seems to be upgradable.  And anyway, how would one 
control/configure these libs?
