first, please update. Xfce 4.6 shouldn't used anymore. Second, read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HAL about HAL and how you can change the name of a device.

thunar opens automatically but the name of the external drive has a
unicode character. How to configure xfce so that the name of the drive
is of a specific name, e.g. '/media/externaldrive'
