This makes me laugh. as soon as screens get bigger (be it horizontally
or vertically) everyone in the software world wants to "make use" of
that "extra space".

Sorry but my favorite web browser (Mozilla SeaMonkey) already found a
use for that "extra horizontal space"... namely: the browser´s
"Sidebar Tab".

So, no, there´s no "extra space" anymore for vertical panels. ;)
