System-wide logout script?

I asked for something like this a while ago and the answer was that
there isn't such a thing.

In my case I needed a way to shut down VirtualBox in a civilised way
before [x]ubuntu shut down.

As you say an X equivalent of .bash_logout is what's needed, but there
isn't one.
