how to start xfce4.8 desktop environment

It looks more like version mismatch than missing anything.

And theorically, You can use any WM in any DE but in practice, DE's
window managers works better in their respective DEs. I used compiz in
Xfce without a hintch for a long time. However Fluxbox comes with some
DE like features. It should be fine I think, Try and see.
