It already stopped working with gtk2 in GNOME 2.32 when they switched
from bonobo to dbus for their panel applets. I filed a bug about this at
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7322 but I am not overly
optimistic it will get fixed. In fact I'm not even sure it's worth it
because gnome-panel applets are about to die out because of gnome-shell.
