Hi Todd & Margo!

I was really puzzled to discover your query regarding server control
in list dedicated to xfce. I'm more puzzled to learn that you are
attempting to use a server while running gnome. I can appreciate
that many things have changed regarding how servers are run, but if
you want to prevent accidents from occuring it is best to just drop
the pretty interfaces entirely and rely on the command line interface
entirely.

You are running CentOS after all, a member of the Linux family so you
should be able to strip all the gui stuff off it -- which will allow
you two things:

* You'll have more space for serious tools.
* You'll be able to execute precisely only those commands you
actually intend to execute via the Terminal.

Personally, I despise gnome. I prefer xfce because it allows me to
get to the CLI and other tools very quickly. Of course,
fluxbox/blackbox is even faster but I've gotten spoiled by themes and
artwork as backdrops so I tend to live within xfce.

However I'm not running a server providing web based services. You'll save time
avoiding which pretty buttons to push (which caused your predicament)
and focus instead on executing the command you intend to implement
via the CLI.
