Multiple xfdesktops running, and very slow startup

Yes, that's exactly what I was doing.  Although all of the memory was
eaten up there didn't seem to be any process in particular that was
using it.

Further information:-

    The problem isn't anyhting to do with xfce/GUI, if I leave the
    system to idle for a while after power up then logging on for the
    first time into xfce is just as quick as subsequent logins.

    So, the problem is simply something (or things) running at system
    power up that is resource hogging (or conflicting with the GUI
    startup).  I'll have a hunt around elsewhere, nothing to do with
    xfce really.
