Since you're running Gentoo, I suppose your Xfce is 4.6? You could try
xfce4-mixer then which ships a standalone mixer application and a panel
plugin. Even with 4.2 and 4.4 there was an xfce4-mixer package but it
wasn't quite as usable, I'd say.
