Network manager in xfce ?

No, in fact it has nothing to do with network-manager. Believe me.

Sorry, there's a qui-proquo here. The whole bar is indeed a panel. One
of the component of that panel is the notification area, where the NM
icon appears.

That's why I said that you just have to add back the notification area
to the bottom panel (right click, add plugin, notification area).
