Ok. Compiled and installed xorg 7.4, and behold, the Capslock problem is
gone (the commands in .Xmodmap are respected again).

And, even nicer, though XFCE now seems to remember the presence of
Firefox in the session, before 7.4, FF opened in Workspace 0. Now it
opens (correctly) in the previously occupied workspace.

Great! Though I had a couple of tough times with compiling xorg,
particularly near the end, with 7.4 it is simpler that 7.3. Just the kbd
problems justify the upgrade.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.

John
Happy again with a Capslock-less keyboard!
