Recovering From Error -- UPDATE

   Update: I've poked and prodded and restored the panel, root window
background, and panel icons. But, I have no virtual desktop (workspace)
window icons on the panel.

   Right-click on the root window, and selecting Settings->Workspaces
confirms that I have 10 defined. Settings->Panel has nothing that affects
whether the workspaces are displayed. I see no other options for Settings
that turns on the workspace display in the panel.

   How can I do this?
