Blank Area on Background

I have a blank area that covers the upper 1/4th of my background 
wallpaper.  If I reset the background, the blank area returns on the 
next restart of xfce.  Any ideas what might be causing it?

I have finally come back to the _graphical_ unix world after about a 
nine year hiatus.  I really chose xfce over kde and gnome thus far.  I 
used to be an fvwm2 user.  Xfce is pretty slick thus far.
