Hmm, now that's interesting.  Do you know if the apps in question
support startup notification?  The easiest way to check is, right after
you click the menu icon, the mouse cursor should turn into the
pointer-with-hourglass, and then it should go back to a normal pointer
when the app starts.  (You'll probably only see the pointer change
while hovering over the desktop.)  And, do you see the same memory loss
when launching apps that do *not* support startup notification?

That's the only place I can see memory being lost; otherwise, xfdesktop
doesn't allocate anything while launching an app.  (Though if this is
the case, you should see the same problem with xfce4-panel and maybe
other things.)
