External device mounted from the Desktop become unmounted?

Was it really unmounted (i.e. did you check the output of mount)?

Unplugging the device while it's still mounted is likely to cause
trouble, so from now on weird things can/will happen.

The real question is probably: Which application unmounted the drive and
why doesn't HAL report the removal of the device?
