That's because your showdesktop plugin is for 4.4, not for 4.2.
(libxfce4panel is new in 4.4.)

It's pretty clear to me at this point that your problems here were
caused by a broken gtk stack update (glib or pango, probably), and were
not problems with Xfce itself. Please be more careful in the future
before assigning blame.
