xfmedia build problem

I downloaded the latest version of xfmedia (9.2)

./configure --prefix=/usr/local

aborts with:

checking for X... no
configure: error: X Window system libraries and header files are required

libx11-dev is installed.

Since I was able to successfully build Xfce 4.2.2 using the
GUI installer I can't explain this error.

BTW: A Debian etch distribution (MEPIS)
