Yes, I'm replying to myself, but this is aimed at the OP:

Ah, yes, as Alexander pointed out, you also must have 
hicolor-icon-theme from freedesktop.org installed.  Both it and 
desktop-file-utils were added to Slackware-11.0, so I forgot 
about mentioning it.  Perhaps you should consider upgrading your 
installation to Slackware 11.0.
